Sustainable Development
Our policy
Sustainable development combines economic progress, social responsibility and respect for the environment.
In accordance with the policy of the DS Smith Plc Group, the DS Smith Kaysersberg division pays very close attention to respect for this philosophy, which involves meeting the needs of current and, particularly, future generations.
We operate in compliance with current regulations, constantly investing in our production tools in order to increase the safety of our activities, improve performance and support innovation; all of which proves our commitment to meeting the legitimate needs of our clients, employees and shareholders.
Our action
Through its various commitments and the organisation of its industrial activities, DS Smith Plc actively contributes to the protection of natural resources :
By recycling 1.5 million tonnes of waste paper/cardboard every year and producing 2.1 million tonnes of packaging and paper made essentially from recycled products every year, we have been a key player in this process for a long time.
Every division within the group actively contributes to this. DS Smith Kaysersberg, for example, helps to protect the environment:
- by continually improving our packaging products design in order to reduce their impact on the environment;
- by including environmental considerations among the selection criteria for our investments;
- by controlling our energy consumption;
- by limiting the production of waste and ensuring that waste is recycled.
Our monitoring
In order to ensure the continuity and coherence of these activities, DS Smith Kaysersberg:
- has put in place organisational systems that guarantee excellent monitoring of environmental performance, systems that have generally been awarded ISO 14001 certification by independent bodies.
- ensures that its sites comply with current regulations and makes the investment necessary whenever regulatory changes occur. More than 3.5 M€ were invested in this area during the last financial year.
- produces internal reports concerning environmental performance, which are directly monitored by the CEO of DS Smith Plc
Individual site monitoring
Finally, each DS Smith Kaysersberg site monitors its own performance on the basis of numerous indicators relating to quality, safety and the environment.
Our local teams would be pleased to communicate this information to you.
Cardboard
We use recycled fibres
Each year, our two cardboard factories produce around 205,000 tonnes of cardboard made from recycled paper and cardboard (using approximately 240,000 tonnes of raw materials); we are an essential cog in the recycling process.
"Using waste paper that has been carefully sorted and selected, we produce different qualities of technical grade cardboard combining visual quality with technical performance, while keeping energy consumption as low as possible."
Active in the technical grade cardboard market, we offer high added-value products to responsible companies and consumers; we make an important contribution to our customers' and partners' source reduction efforts.
For example, thanks to the quality of our technical grade cardboard, our palletisation slipsheets are about 25% lighter than those made of standard recycled cardboard, but perform equally well.
Our products' excellent mechanical resistance enables users to benefit from exceptional reusage rates in the context of rotating slipsheet stocks.
